Hi, I'm Ted.
I'm a PhD student in electrical engineering at MIT working in the Capasso group at Harvard University.
My work spans quantum cascade lasers to metasurfaces, but can broadly be described as "integrated photonics". I believe the future of technology will be defined by chip-scale integration of optical systems, shrinking complexity while amplifying capability.
At the core, my goal is simple: to tackle the hardest problems with the smallest possible solutions.
Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are more than mid-infrared light sources, they’re a platform for rethinking how lasers fit into photonic circuits. Instead of sitting off to the side as add-ons, we place lasers at the heart of the chip, weaving them directly into integrated photonics. Rarely do we use traditional Fabry–Perot designs; instead, we craft rings, racetracks, couplers, and tapered amplifiers, each unlocking new ways to generate and control light.
By making the laser the starting point of photonic circuits, we enable fully integrated systems — from tunable lasers to pulsed sources and broadband frequency combs. QCLs are our test bed, but the principles extend far beyond, pointing to a new class of integrated lasers across the photonic spectrum.
